With the recent onslaught of prelims, projects, and problem sets (oh my!), I've resorted to dressing and eating in extreme comfort. Not quite comfortable enough to, say, wear leggings as pants, but comfortable enough that instead of wearing a real bra, I've<br />

<b>The Food</b><br />
Matt said he wanted to roast a duck when I suggested we roast an animal several weeks ago. So he was super duper ecstatic when I proposed <a href="http://www.thehungrymouse.com/2009/02/11/the-best-way-to-roast-a-duck-hello-crispy-skin/" target="_blank">this recipe</a> for Peking duck. Though, we are not as adept duck-roasters as that lovely human being, we decided to give it a whirl. So, we started by removing the innards from our <strike>slightly frozen</strike> duck.<br />

There's a part in the instructions that says to tie the legs together with a piece of birch string or something. Do I have fancy things? No. Do I even have spare string? Nope. So we decided to cut a slit in the skin-fat and pull the legs through it.<br />

So then we roasted it for 4 hours, flipping the bird every hour. At hour three, we made a glaze of soy sauce, molasses, agave nectar, and sriracha. I don't even know what's an acceptable substitute for honey, but agave nectar supposedly tastes just as good and has almost the same consistency. Due to an allergy, I have no idea what honey tastes like.<br />

<b>The Fashion</b><br />
Duck is a luxury food and luxury sometime equates with comfort. Comfort to me is a good pair of pants (or no pants if those are the best pants I can find) and a sports bra. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Sweater (Esprit), pants (ASOS, fun fact: I got them that evening), tank top (American Eagle), sports bra (Lululemon athletica), necklace (bought in China), and hat (knit by my friend's mom)</span></td></tr>

<br />
Not to get too personal, but this semester has really taken a toll on me emotionally and personally. I really wish I could find more time to do fun cooking things and spring break will hopefully open up the doors to some personal development.<br />

<br />
Sorry this is coming so late. I have been so busy the passed few weeks that having time to even use the bathroom has become difficult. But I am back (sort of). I may write another entry this coming week, but I have so much work that I am taking time out to remember that I am a person and not just a study bot.<br />
<br />
But my Valentine's Day was marvelous. Matt and I were all romantical and took time to appreciate each other. One of those things was shrimp tacos. The other was truffles. And here's the process we used to make them.<br />

The smell of heavy creaming being cooked with cinnamon is unlike any other. I was so excited about that alone that I wanted to eat the heavy cream. But then I remembered that I had truffles to make.<br />

<b>The Fashion</b><br />
I like to think of burgundy as pink for girls who don't want to admit they like pink. There, I said it. I wear a lot of burgundy because it has the delicateness of a pink but the fierceness of a red. But it can also be super romantic. Which is why I wore two different burgundy dresses for my Valentine's day events.<br />

The above outfit is what I wore on actual Valentine's Day. I love that dress because it is so dang cute. Since the hem is longer in the front, I feel so much more modest wearing it. But since Valentine's Day feel on a Thursday, I had to bike to classes. So I'm pretty sure I flashed half of campus.<br />

See what I did there? Though, I think most people refer to it as Carnivale weekend, but either way. I hope you're enjoying traditional indulgences before Lent (if you're into that). I also hope everyone stayed safe in Snowgnarok here on the East Coast. <br />
<br />
Just before the storm came, Matt and I went to the grocery store to get some food, and one of our purchases was scallops, one of our favorite seafoods. And I guess I should feature the recipe used here (since it is somewhat original).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The defrosting was probably the longest part. But soon after came the spicing and searing. I like searing because high heat and minimal contact with oil creates flavor and crunch without too much unhealthiness.<br />

Since it was Carnival weekend, I decided to go a little crazy with my outfit. By crazy, I mean, I wore leggings as pants and not just ANY leggings, but my favorite galaxy leggings. The color also matches the nautical theme of the dinner with the wave-shaped rice with the scallops. I wish I had a masquerade mask to wear, but that's an art project for another time.<br />
<br />
So no entry on Tuesday, but Thursday, look forward to a post about Valentine's Day's ultimate treat: chocolate truffle.<br />

I bought them during a recent trip to NYC for my cousin's daughter's Baptism. That outfit is not the one I wore to the ceremony, but it definitely shows off how the boots fit on my legs. After the ceremony, we went to brunch at a place called <a href="http://www.veselka.com/bowery/" target="_blank">Veselka</a> in the Bowery. The food is amazing, but most of it is not gluten-free friendly. So I went with a vegan mushroom soup and eggs Benedict (which was served on toast because I, once again, forgot to be assertive). Luckily, my allergy is not triggered by food touching, so that's okay.<br />

<br />
Sunday look forward to a post about no-bake cookies. I have to cut out Tuesday blogging in favor of homework and having my life together. Sorry!<br />
<br />
Keep it yummy,<br />

Well, not entirely, I did have two pieces of general Tso's chicken that Matt gave because I was really craving protein. Or meat. But that's just me trying to listen to my body and what it wants.<br />
<br />However, <a href="http://www.thiscantbevegan.com/2011/11/pumpkin-corn-enchiladas-with-salsa.html" target="_blank">this recipe</a> I found on the internet when looking for things to do with squash and pumpkins. And oh man, y'all are in for a treat. Why can't I follow recipes? I did not feel like buying canned <strike>tomatoes</strike> pumpkin if I had most of a butternut squash lying around. Since it wasn't enough for the recipe, I also added a sweet potato.<br />

The rest of the filling, I kept the same. Wait, that's a lie. I have a pecan allergy, so I added almonds because I think those are similar in texture. I also don't have spinach in the house right now, so I skipped those.<br />

Sixteen tortillas went into this meal. Six were Trader Jose's and ten were La Banderita. The La Banderita tortillas help up a lot better after filling and wrapping, so I might exclusively buy those from now on. Layering was creative because those 16 did not neatly fit in a row.<br />

Since I also could not come up with a pounds of salsa verde, I mixed it with some hot goya salsa to make the 16-ounces of salsa. It tasted so good though, highly recommended. Before popping these into the oven, I sprinkled some non-vegan shredded cheddar. Hence the non-vegan part of the meal, but honestly, those could have been omitted all together.<br />

On Sunday, I might not get around to blogging because I'll be out of town (Ithaca-town), but regardless, the entry will be about navigating cuisines that are inherently not gluten-free (I'll be at a Ukrainian restaurant for brunch and those meals are typically sandwich and flour-heavy).<br />

Keep it yummy,<br />

Seriously, it was intense. But last time I tried making a pie (which I somehow forgot to blog about, my apologies), it did not come out very pie-like. It looked more like a cobbler, but was still delicious.<br />

I did not feel like making two pie crusts, so I halved the recipe. My friend, Lauren, brought a stick of butter, of which we used 2/3 of cup of to make the dough, which looked like this:<br />

The fashion was definitely inspired by the colors of the pie filling and the fact that it was deathly cold outside. So how do you keep warm?<br />

Layers. Like ogres and onions. Since that day I had a presentation to give, I wanted to dress well. But it was also in the single digits Fahrenheit, so I had to be smart about how I looked. The fact that I had to bike a mile round trip between classes did not help either. I put the sweater over the collared shirt, which kept my core nice and warm. The yoga pants are so much thicker than regular leggings and have more structure, rendering them appropriate even if I did not have a skirt on. And of course, I wore my warmest jacket with a circle-scarf wrapped three times around my neck to keep my face warm.<br />

On Thursday, we continue the saga of I Can't Follow Recipes with an awesome recipe for vegan enchiladas and a super-edgy coordinated outfit to go!<br />

The turkey was delicious but there were more leftovers than two people (my parents) could eat before it goes bad, so they gave me some. It made eating the actual day I got back a whole lot easier, but then for dinner, I wanted to be creative, but did not have the energy to follow the exact recipe. So I heavily modified the Chicken Quinoa Salad from <a href="http://www.janehornby.com/" target="_blank">Jane Hornby's</a> Fresh and Easy book.<br />

I love cooking quinoa in vegetable broth. I, for some reason, prefer the taste of vegetable broth, mostly because it isn't as salty to me. But first, we had to cook some onions and garlic for the most aromatic of flavors.<br />

I'm starting to learn that I am becoming a big fan of self-made, oil-based dressing for salads and the such. It's lighter, full of omega-3's, and does not take away from the dish itself. Most of the reason why I have an aversion to Chicken Caesar salad now is how gross the dressing tastes to me.<br />

A dish, to me, always has to include some kind of vegetable. I don't know how I made it through my childhood eating not too many vegetables. Snap peas live up to their name by giving a nice change in texture to the grainy quinoa and soft onions.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">"I've watched enough Food Network to know what good plating is" - Matt</span></td></tr>

I mixed the dressing and then added it to my dish. I then elegantly layered the turkey on top of it, which soon turned into a mash-up of all components that got ferried into mouth with a fork. It was so delicious though, I can't even begin. Not reheating the turkey added a great textural difference, though I'm sure it tastes awesome with some freshly roasted meat.<br />
<br />
Onto the fashion. It was around 0 degrees F at the time this meal was being made. And the entire week following. I'm so happy I got a bunch of sweaters for Christmas and located my fingerless gloves that turn into mittens that keep my thumbs warm. I went with this sweater to mimic the brightness of the snap peas and the brass tones in the necklace match the quinoa. I wore thigh-high socks under my pants and combat boots make pretty awesome snow shoes.<br />

Getting around without one was hard, so that encouraged me to fall asleep early and whatnot. Anyway, an important lesson I learned was to be more assertive in asking for my gluten-free foods (or foods that inherently do not have gluten in it) for fear of my stomach freaking out. <br />
<br />
It starts with me and my friends going to South Beach for the day before going out. I dressed so cute because I was hoping for some shenanigans.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU0V9IEt8z3SWsv4sgSVj2zgltaOJRlV2RT18KVr2-6jCbhbkpjyfDgTdSqPl4oUlFg8WAkcuLtldMCXr1eQGoE8lj6R6xlQfaekAs10tNPUGKukUWfoVORKDRtRpqojIU2J7LU47BjUhB/s1600/IMG_5597.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU0V9IEt8z3SWsv4sgSVj2zgltaOJRlV2RT18KVr2-6jCbhbkpjyfDgTdSqPl4oUlFg8WAkcuLtldMCXr1eQGoE8lj6R6xlQfaekAs10tNPUGKukUWfoVORKDRtRpqojIU2J7LU47BjUhB/s400/IMG_5597.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Tee shirt (urban outfitters), skirt (Pacsun), sandals (century 21), bag (free people)</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So Caroline, one of my friends, the one I was staying with the week, proposed going to Mangos, which is this bar/live-music stage/restaurant full of funny people and known for food. I looked down the menu, which was full of standard bar fare, until I saw shrimp tacos, which said they had corn tortillas. So I ordered it. And man, I was disappointed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ-kYJ6Q6RKG5sgKSrznSQsvG6y9xmivgndctNiFAaADeHzVJGDz43LYSC7W3-OGv3gQrWevr3r7kwB8pa9gBx62ZJe3RNb_wCm8QAJBgx91E_ah_0XkUmyZIL_XZ7c95BUeoTnTaTuPQ3/s1600/IMG_5607.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ-kYJ6Q6RKG5sgKSrznSQsvG6y9xmivgndctNiFAaADeHzVJGDz43LYSC7W3-OGv3gQrWevr3r7kwB8pa9gBx62ZJe3RNb_wCm8QAJBgx91E_ah_0XkUmyZIL_XZ7c95BUeoTnTaTuPQ3/s400/IMG_5607.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">That, my friends, is a flour tortilla.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So, I should have been more assertive and asked for corn tortillas, but it was so loud and it was hard to flag down the waiter--crap, I am making too many excuses, but either way, I did not speak up to have it changed. What's the least logical thing that I did? Ate it all anyway. And cuddled with myself for a while. But, after several trips to the bathroom, I was fine, but it was such a damper on my day.<br />
<br />
So the take-home message is: when you're away from home and going to restaurants you've never been to, don't be afraid to change dishes and get what you want! That's my rant. And probably the person who had the best time was the waiter who gave me his number...<br />

Sorry for not posting for so long. I went to Miami (which I will post about sometime between tonight and tomorrow), had some personal stuff to deal with, and now school started, so I am once again trying to set up a schedule. To force me to do things, the most probable schedule will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. <br />
<br />
So, tomorrow, look forward to a charming post about Miami and being assertive about your allergy (while looking cute despite major bloating), Sunday will feature some delicious leftover turkey with quinoa and dressing (with an outfit to go with it), and Tuesday will be about blueberry pie that I made with a <a href="http://scandinavianfood.about.com/od/pastryrecipes/r/Basic-Spelt-Pie-Crust.htm" target="_blank">spelt crust</a> and tips of keeping warm and adorable in sub-zero temperatures.<br />
<br />
Look forward to writing it all (whilst taking 19 credits, aka, six classes).<br />
<br />
Keep it yummy (and warm),<br />

I've had a friend over the past few days and was just everywhere all the times. I did not have much access to my laptop when Jil was over, but now, sadly, she went home and is going to Italy for the whole semester.<br />
<br />
But I digress. I was strolling through SoHo the other day, listening to Grimes, I looked across the street to find a place named <a href="http://www.takataka.mx/index.html" target="_blank">Taka Taka</a>, which serves Japanese tacos and Mexican sushi. I just had to go there. I went with my friends, Danielle and Jil, and we had the greatest time. It was a fun-seeming place: the music was trendy and the decor made it seem fun. <br />

There was also a conveyor belt from which to take traditional sushi rolls for appetizer. What they also gave was a sampling of spicy sauces. When I say spicy, I mean, I wish I had milk at the table to cool my mouth. And I hate milk.<br />

I was most interested in the Japanese tacos, so I ordered the Miss Carnitas. It was a taco with Japanese-style cooked meat with guacamole and pico de gallo. I loved it! It was, however, not a lot of food for $21, but I would definitely get it again, considering I was there for dinner, which doesn't necessarily have to be pricey, but if I'm in the city with a friend who I'm not seeing until August, splurging a bit is allowable.<br />

Polka dots have been super popular and trendy over the last few years and, for Christmas, Danielle got me a pair of polka-dot sweater tights. I wore this outfit the other day, but as with the <a href="http://wheatfreefashion.blogspot.com/2012/12/i-eat-meat-sometimes.html" target="_blank">gray-scale outfit</a>, I think this outfit provide a nice contrast from colors present in the foods. And if you just stick with tradition sushi, the black bottom and white top mimic the black seaweed and the white rice. You are what you eat, right?<br />

I love all the gifts I received, but my favorite has to be the computer. It is so beautifully efficient and I am actually a big fan of Windows 8. I am typing on it right now! Part of the package I wanted to give myself was an updated iPod, with songs I never listen to deleted and new music downloaded. It is just the way I want it and I could not be happier.<br />
<br />
For food, I eat the same dishes for Christmas every year. In Polish tradition, fish is eaten for dinner on Christmas Eve, Wigilia, when most of the immediate family gather. We had four different types of herring, a broiled lake fish, barszcz, pierogi, vegetarian bigos, eel, and smoked salmon. In some houses, they make as many as 12 different fish dishes, but we don't have the space or means to. I got to enjoy some South African white wine with my eel, bigos, and fish; the meal was delicious and gluten-free. The whole pescatarian Christmas feast stems from Catholic religious tradition, where eating meat is undesirable on the eve's of major holidays. In my family, we always offer coffee and tea with the desserts platter. For me, there was my mother's flourless cheesecake and we also bought chocolate mousse cake from <a href="http://www.eataly.com/" target="_blank">Eataly</a>, this Italian masterpiece of a grocery store.<br />
<br />
Then Christmas day, my aunt came over for some roast ham, potatoes, South African red wine, meat bigos, and leftover smoked salmon. It was a pretty relaxed day. I hope you guys had relaxing Christmases/holidays as well!<br />
<br />
Keep it yummy,<br />

The downside? No one buys food in advance. So, for dinner Friday night while my parents shopped for food in Greenpoint to prepare for Christmas Eve, I had to run to the grocery store to get myself a meat product. It was pretty weird buying only one thing, but I already have my staple foods at home: quinoa, rice, green beans, colored peppers, and leafy greens. The meat product I chose: lamb.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqT_MA7Z2uwi-H4yQm-yIW1Wwmp96wD9kH7vsuLiJly86Pmdtl7Ac1zAFJDddJkosZViNSpyurWiizyxzy0k3IMzP5wMjhSxMYphXhyphenhyphenCJMTBq_N1yp5IUlmRvvZg1CAzd_n7ODFjNsrTk2/s1600/IMG_5433.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqT_MA7Z2uwi-H4yQm-yIW1Wwmp96wD9kH7vsuLiJly86Pmdtl7Ac1zAFJDddJkosZViNSpyurWiizyxzy0k3IMzP5wMjhSxMYphXhyphenhyphenCJMTBq_N1yp5IUlmRvvZg1CAzd_n7ODFjNsrTk2/s400/IMG_5433.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Seared lamb chops, sauteed string beans, kale, and pepper, boiled quinoa stir-fried with soy sauce.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To me, the most delicious gluten-free meals are the ones that do not replace foods with substitutes. My mother thought that this plate had too much food on it, but most of it was green and, using little oil, could be healthy. Also, the more colors, the more nutrition you're getting and who doesn't love that?<br />
<br />
Since this plate had so many different colors on it, I wore a single-pallet outfit to balance it out. I love gray, white, and black, so I combined all the colors. Matt suggested I buy these particular jeans because he thinks my legs look good in them and the design is pretty cool. I have to agree with him.<br />

Sorry for the brief hiatus. I really wanted to focus during finals and finish strong. I was cooking! Just not documenting anything (to be frank, I was wearing sports bras, sweaters, and yoga pants. Every day). But now I'm back to blogging every Wednesday and Sunday. So get excited!<br />
<br />
Today (tomorrow), it is mine and Matt's third month. Yes, we are that corny. So we went out to Le Pain Quotidien. It used to be one of my favorite bread shops, back when I could eat bread. Now they have spelt bread, which does not give me any problems, so I gladly eat that. I got a little dolled up for the brunch, but first I'll talk about what I ate.<br />

I haven't eaten a sandwich in a while, so this was a very fine choice. Spelt is super close to actual wheat, without the after-taste. I had non-gluten-free toast once and it had this terrible after-taste that I could not stand.<br />

Like I said, I decided to get dolled up. Because we were going on a date, so I straightened my hair, did some makeup and wore a skirt. I like that the skirt went with the greenery in the sandwich. Kind of. I clearly like my winter wear dark like my coffee.<br />

I bring to you Burrito Bowl-Pies! They have all the filling-goodness of a pie and the holding capacity of a bowl. And you can eat the bowl as part of your dinner. How cool is that?<br />

But I was pretty excited to hear that my cousin would be accommodating and make all this gluten-free stuffing that she and I can eat for the Turkey Feast. I just loved that my family took such good care of everything and it's exciting to know that marketplaces and restaurants have gluten-free options for those of us who want traditional foods, but cannot eat them.<br />

The only time I really ate pumpkins was in pie at Thanksgiving and that was about it. Through the C.S.A. weekly box of vegetables, though, we received an acorn squash. I had never seen one before and Andrew and Andrea were fans of roasting them and/or putting stuff in them. So, I decided to use the "and" function.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/247827_3841212753324_1185420374_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/247827_3841212753324_1185420374_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Finished product! Acorn squash stuffed with rice, scallions, carrots, colored bell peppers, and topped with Parmesan cheese</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I wasn't expecting it to be so sweet on the inside, I was pretty proud of myself for preemptively adding spices like curry powder and turmeric to the rice to add some kick to the meal. I admittedly added red pepper flakes which are quickly becoming my favorite flavoring. <br />
<br />
With this meal, I would try to pair it with like colors. I usually dislike yellow, but I have this one tank top from Free People that is to die for. I have a similar skirt that's corduroy with buttons from Forever21 and a BDG olive-green cardigan to match the colors of the squash skin and the scallions. I usually wear my Minnetonka moccasins as comfort-shoes, but sadly, I will have to retire them soon. I'll probably just replace them with a similar pair from the same brand.<br />

I'm feeling somewhat better, but I'm really just using my blog as stress.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I saw <a href="http://mylittlefashionista.tumblr.com/post/32436420755/thecakebar-how-to-make-a-cupcake-flower" target="_blank">this post on Tumblr</a> and was absolutely inspired. I really wanted to do this one day, but did not have the resources. On the day celebrating our first month together, Matt and I decided that we wanted to get crafty. So we went to A.C. Moore, and later Wegmans, to acquire supplies with which to make a Cupcake Bouquet. I also really wanted to make cupcakes anyway, but he took it the extra step.<br />

The cupcakes were delightful. The cake mix had the prefect consistently. Though, I will be honest, baking non-vegan was different for me. I hadn't done it in a while, but thank God that this mix was so easy to use, because I would not have been able to figure out how to use eggs. Then again, that was Matt's problem, since he was doing most of the baking.<br />
<br />
We also bought a fancy pastry bag with tips in order to the frosting on artfully. Matt is pretty boss at frosting, but unfortunately, we were completely winging the recipe and it got really runny and, after adding more confectioner's sugar, super tough. You can't have all the nice things, can you?<br />

Unfortunately, I got a phone call from Wegman's indicating soy lecithin in the cake mix that was not previously listed as an ingredient. Excuse me while we bury yet another fantastic product on the long list of things I can't eat. Lovely.<br />

Keep it yummy,<br />

<br />
My parents came up to visit on Sunday and, prior to visiting, they usually ask for a list of groceries or foodstuffs that I want. Unfortunately, my life sucks, and most spreads have soy lecithin as an emulsifier (I will do a post next week on a chocolate cake mix that unfortunately got recalled because of the presence of soy lecithin that wasn't previously labeled. Boo). Since these products have more than 2% soy lecithin per volume, my parents did not want to risk buying it and making me sick. So, I had to come up with something new.<br />
<br />
The lovely Nicole Hunn at Gluten-Free on a Shoestring provided a <a href="http://glutenfreeonashoestring.com/bittersweet-chocolate-almond-butter-introducing-weck-jars/" target="_blank">recipe</a> for bittersweet chocolate almond spread. It seemed so easy, I just HAD to try it. Being that I am a broke-ass college student, I had to modify the recipe a bit. And by a bit, I mean, I just used cocoa powder and a blender because the food processor might as well had been created by this little pony:<br />

Given the fact that we were late-night cooking, glamour was not something I really focused on. </div>
The second day in Montreal was filled with walking, brunching, comfort-fooding, and pastry-eating. I actually tried to dress myself and looked adorable in front of a stone house adjacent to a quad-park at McGill University.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/548385_3864230888763_1038308169_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/548385_3864230888763_1038308169_n.jpg" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Beanie from ASOS, vest from H&M, top from Banana Republic, BDG jeans, Minnetonka booties, Ecote handbag, and the studded cuff I always wear.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
We then ate at a kitschy little bistro that featured many French children's comics. I ordered savory, buckwheat crepes and they were to die for. Where else to get good crepes than in a province in a country that has French-speakers?<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Me eating an egg, cheese, ham, and onion crepe with a side of coffee.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And then Jil, Katharine, and I wandered around the old quarter for several hours, taking pictures of random shops we found and being silly. One of the foods I definitely wanted to eat while in Montreal was poutine (which I consistently mispronounced to say something else). We found it at a hole-in-the-wall drunchy place, but Jil and Katharine decided to eat some eclairs and drink cappucinos while I tasted the poutine in this lovely establishment named ChocoMacaMousse. It had some of the cutest decor and the eclairs were too good. I actually enjoyed the poutine, but I could definitely go my entire life without eating it again.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Me eating the poutine. Sad part of it, is that it was gluten-free (even the gravy)</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Then our foodie adventuring led us to a Polish restaurant, which left me a very happy Polak. Jil had never had Polish food before in her life, so this opportunity was excellent for introducing her to some of my favorite dishes. We got borscht and I got my favorite food: golabki. She got fried kluski with meat (which is not gluten-free...yet!).<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Golabki: cabbage, rice, meat, and onions. Side of mashed potatoes and tons of veggies.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And then we went out with a bang, drinking absinthe, to a Crystal Castles gig at this awesome venue called the Metropolis. It was seriously a good show and a great way to end our trip. We wearily rode back to America the next day. I had a wonderful time in Canada for the weekend and I seriously want to go back there forever.<br />
<br />
Keep it yummy,<br />

Sorry I've been MIA for the passed few weeks. This school year has been hella busy and I honestly can barely find the time think and breathe for a moment (I <i>was</i> taking 7 classes and 6 of them had something due in one week, for example). But I am back to blogging (I hope)! During a long weekend we had at school, instead of going back to my first love, New York City, I went to a new place: Montreal, Quebec. For some completely, <strike>previously</strike> uninformed reason, I had been a lover of all things Canadian (except for Beiber and Nickleback, but we can ignore those), so I was majorly excited to see everything that Montreal had to offer me <strike>for three days</strike>.<br />
<br />
The weather was a factor that my friends and I completely forgot to prepare for. I just brought clothes that worked for me during the mild fall temperatures of Ithaca, NY, not realizing that Canada had actually been located some...oh, I don't know...4 to 5 hours North-ward. As you can imagine, this caused problems. But I still managed to layer and dress adorably while eating some of the best food ever.<br />
<br />
The first night, I did not take an outfit photo, but we went to this lovely sushi place called Ginger. We found it completely by accident, too, which was fine, considering everything was amazing.<br />

Given the fact that all we did was explore the neighborhood we stayed in. For dessert, we found this beautiful pastry shop called Juliette + Chocolat, which had the best brownies ever. Has a brownie ever melted in your lips like chocolate does? Nope, not until you've had these. They also had a gluten-free option, which made my heart sing.<br />

For clothing, I wore a leather vest from H&M, a white shirt with a blue cat on it with the words "Casse Toi" from Urban Outfitters, BDG black skinnies, Minnetonka moccasins, and my grey snood. Sorry for the lack of pictures, but after 7 hours of traveling, taking pics is the last thing you want to do.<br />

And since this entry is so long and involved, I will write it in installments. Part two (day two) will come out sometime before Friday (maybe even ON Friday, who knows).<br />

So I was so happy that BabyCakes came out with a recipe. And what better way to surprise someone for their birthday besides baking them cookies! Matt's birthday was last week (I am the worst blogger; the passed two weeks have been super busy and rough) so I decided to bake him thin mints.<br />

Making these was a lot of fun. But it took about an hour and a half because I was trying to do too many things at once and even though I have a bigger kitchen, there never seems to be enough space. But they received rave reviews from Matt, my housemates, and Dylan. So, I'd call it a success!<br />

Since black is associated with dark chocolate and green is associated with mint, this dress I think goes with the concept of thin mints. I was pretty excited that it was the first day of fall weather, because I love boots and tights. It makes me feel more stylish and creative than just wearing a dress with sandals. Bring on the cold, Ithaca!<br />

Keep it yummy,<br />

UNTIL NOW!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.cornellsun.com/section/news/content/2012/09/05/collegetown-pizza-offer-new-menu-dryden-locale" target="_blank">Collegetown Pizza to Offer New Menu in Dryden Locale</a><br />
<br />
By now, I mean, whenever CTP opens up again. But either way, that is exciting news for everyone who is wheat-free and gluten-free, and since they have a special oven for it, cross-contamination will not be an issue. Also, the quality of the pizza should be the same. I'll let you know once I decide to go.<br />
<br />
My outfit today? I've spent most of the day in the freeze-box library called Mann. So I wore black skinny jeans, a turquoise tank top, my BDG ankle boots, gray snood-beanie, Aerie hoodie, Urban Outfitters watch, Coach bracelet, and studded wrap-around bracelet. I am so comfy and warm right now.Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18136039103704415121noreply@blogger.com0Mann Library, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA42.4487695 -76.476371142.447305 -76.478838599999989 42.450233999999995 -76.4739036tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694839452796887061.post-89225867927482955072012-09-04T12:15:00.001-04:002012-09-04T12:15:34.764-04:00Salmon Roll-UpsSo, today I really don't feel like eating meat. I have no idea why, but sometimes I get into these moods where it just does not appeal to me. So today, I wrapped up salmon in cream cheese. Not going to lie, I was a little ravenous and ate half the packet, but that's okay. More omega-3 fatty acids for me!<br />
<br />
Today, I also have an informal interview in a coffee shop. Since I also had to go to bio-medical engineering lab today, I dressed functionally. I bought a Peter Pan collar top from Free People a while back and could not figure out how to style it. So, ladies and gentlemen, this is what I came up with:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0 auto; width: 600px;">
<div style="position: relative;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.polyvore.com/informal_interview/set?.embedder=1539761&.svc=copypaste&id=58106435" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Informal Interview" border="0" height="382" src="http://cfc.polyvoreimg.com/cgi/img-set/.sig/2iCmZr4vpfeKkvqJHKFfHQ/cid/58106435/id/OEM9jRKcSNyEqcBiGCkKWg/size/c600x574.jpg" title="Informal Interview" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: xx-small;">The top looks different from the one above, but you get the idea (I hope)</span></div>
Since my phone died over the weekend (moment of silence), I had to purchase a watch in order to know what time it was, is, whatever tense you want to use. So there we go. A simple meal and a simple, but functional, outfit.<br />
<br />
Keep it yummy,<br />

So I hopped on my bike, went to class, and then went home to eat hot lunch before another class.<br />
<div style="margin: 0 auto; width: 600px;">
<div style="position: relative;">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Tank top (American Eagle), High-waisted shorts (TopShop), Moccasins (Minnetonka), Studded cuff (gift from mom), Necklace (Free People)</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
</div>
I love hot lunches. They make an ok day so much better. Today, I made cilantro-lime rice with spinach and breaded chicken. It was delicious.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyXPPfOjRh7-UGN_85EbpHOzFtmM5ST1Vj8LYa5Eg81ny0o-pTRbIBxIzFgEzatcgXKeotQRIdIuNIF1HfdbLgW9i9vxCg2reqFCqtcvgDeEbMQjZqCaEr-cCreJUMUvhUb4MMSD2y-8-q/s1600/IMG_4873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyXPPfOjRh7-UGN_85EbpHOzFtmM5ST1Vj8LYa5Eg81ny0o-pTRbIBxIzFgEzatcgXKeotQRIdIuNIF1HfdbLgW9i9vxCg2reqFCqtcvgDeEbMQjZqCaEr-cCreJUMUvhUb4MMSD2y-8-q/s400/IMG_4873.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Mmmmm food.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
When I say breaded, I mean tortilla'd. Tortilla crumbs make my life so awesome because I can still enjoy staples from my upbringing like kotlet schabowy risk-free. And that's always a good thing.<br />
<br />
Keep it yummy,<br />
